What do I need to consider when specifying fire rated glazing?

  • E – Integrity – non insulating The ability of a material to withstand fire exposure to one side without transmission of the fire as a result of the passage of flames or hot gasses.
  • When it comes to fire glass, you want to be sure that it offers as much protection as possible in the event of a fire.
  • To ensure the expected fire performance is achieved, should it be called upon, fire or heat-resistant glass must always be specified as part of a tested and approved glazing system and installed by specialists.
  • When ‘W’ is used, this means the glass protects against radiation of heat to an extent, which is usually kept to within 15 kW/m2 on the opposite side of the glass from the fire.

PYRAN® Platinum F & L offers additional impact safety ratings for locations such as door lites, transoms or sidelites, and windows. They have a fire property or function which does not warn of, or extinguish, fire. Fire resistance is defined as the ability of an element of construction to perform its design function during exposure to fire. Guidance for the levels of fire-resistance required when glass is positioned in different areas within a building is detailed part of Building Regulations Approved Document B (AD B). With public awareness now high around fire safety, the glazing component of structures is more important than ever as fire-resistant glass is an important requirement on many projects. As well as being utilised as fireproof windows, our fire-rated glass may be used to construct fireproof glass walls. Smoke containment screens provide fire resistance and maintain integrity at a constant temperature over a set period of time or on a standardized time-temperature curve (DH).

A glazing unit must be able to withstand temperature in excess of 870°C to be classed as fire rated. Reeded fire rated glazing is an unusual glazing solution, but at IQ as everything we do is completely bespoke, if there is a way to achieve something with glass we will find it. Fire glass has many additional features to provide other types of performance as well as fire protection. Comparative testing of E and EW glass demonstrates how quickly radiant heat can cause items on the unexposed side to start smoking and then ignite. EW glass provides greater time for people to escape safely and for the fire brigade to access the area. All the elements must be designed, specified and installed to meet the required performance.
